Not even aged 30 years old, Catherine Riss can pride herself on having reached her goal to become a talented winemaker. In Alsace- like elsewhere- setting up your own estate is something of an obstacle course especially when you were not born into a winegrowing family. Her parents owned a restaurant and she was supposed to follow them into the business. But her focused temperament would not be dictated to. After a viticulture and oenology diploma, she qualified as an oenologist and was recruited by Michel Chapoutier to run a domain he acquired in Reichsfeld, Alsace. Soon she stood on her own two feet. In 2012, she started with a 1.3 –hectare parcel with the invaluable help of Antoine Kreydenweiss and Lucas Rieffel for whom she worked till 2014. In 2015 she settled in her own business premises. Her estate has grown to its current 2.8 hectares with a range including 4 wines: two Riesling and a Pinot Noir. --- Right from the beginning, her work in the vineyard is oriented towards organic viticulture. It was in 2013 that she applied for organic certification and the first organically-certified wines were produced in 2015. Catherine is a meticulous and hardworking winegrower whose primary focus is on mineral extraction and balanced wines. Shes does a fantastic job in the vineyard and uses more and more biodynamic techniques which impart astonishing typicity, fruity character, balance and incredible minerality to her wines. What impressive expertise ! Yes, Catherine is a definitely a talented winegrower who will be talked about for years to come. Hats off to you Madam !
