Unlike most Burgundy wine growers Julien Altaber was not born there but in Auvergne. Son of a dairy farmer, he would have walked in his father’s footsteps if his mother had not insisted on him going to business school with wine specialisation. His mum’s dream was probably to bring her son to become a sales representative for some prestigious vineyard. However, with his strong personality Julien had something else in mind and wanted to have his own vines! An impossible bet in Burgundy where land property cost is extremely high. On top of that the vines available did not match the required quality criterias. It is at that time of intense search period that Julien Altaber met a colourful character : Dominique Derain. As thick as thieves the two friends reached an agreement. Julien became winery assistant in Dominique’s vineyard and Dominique would help Julien find good plots of land. Julien spent over 10 years there ! In 2007, Julien set up a small wine trading business, wine made with organic grapes. In 2011, the two friends found a few “ares” (75) of very old non cloned “Aligoté” vines for Julien near Puligny !!!
In 2012, Julien bought a few vines of “Pinot Noir” then became his own boss in 2013 by buying a winery. Thanks to his vines and wine trading business he now makes his own living . At this point he has no certification but anyone can visit his vineyard and assess that his vines and the grapes he purchases are organically grown. In the winery, minimum manipulation, spontaneous fermentation process, sulfite input avoided (if so, only after wine racking). Barrel aging for a minimum of 5 years, no filtration. As you see, great care is brought to give extreme finesse and good clarity to the wine. We were won over by all we tasted ! A great moment we would like you to share. Have a good wine tasting!
