Julien and Alice Voogt arrived on that magnificent domaine of Château de Brandeau in 2015 : 9,5 ha all in one spot surrounded by woods, hedges, fields and with organic (Ecocert) certification since 1993. How lucky to take over from Andréa and Antony King who revealed their terroir while managing to maintain fauna and flora diversity. Organic growing in the Bordeaux region since the years 90… is just amazing. It’s an opportunity Julien and Alice grabbed… A few investments were made in the winery. Alice also set up a small restaurant (wine bar) nearby which was a great success.
Here, merlot is king (80% : 7,5 ha) against 2 ha only of Cabernet Franc, all planted on silty clay hillsides with full south exposure benefiting from oceanic climate (near the Atlantic). That little paradise is ideal for biodiversity, hard to resist to settling there and produce live wines.
According to vintages, Julien Voogt along with Toby, his percheron horse, choses to sow, work soils, grass etc...or not... The main idea remains in producing fresh grape, ripe enough to best express terroir with absolutely no oenologic makeup. Of course grapes are harvested by hand and extraction may take more or less time according to plots. There again, Château Brandeau does its best to enhance the various expressions of each of its vintages : from lighter fresh fruit cuvées to deeper and more intense ones to age, following the bordelaise tradition : the cuvée « Barrique d’Alice »
Wines are neither fined or filtered, only very little sulphite is added.
