Our opinion on this winery

The grandson and son of a winegrower and yet nothing about Antoine Arena suggested that he might one day become a winegrower himself. Following his dad’s advice he went to Nice to read law and came back to his native land in 1975. That’s when he fell in love with winemaking and the 3-hectare family estate which soon became the flagship domain of the Island. His inclination for the natural cause came as a reaction against large agro-industrial groups of the chemistry sector. Since 1980 assisted by his wife and his two sons-currently taking up the torch progressively- Antoine has spared no effort to conquer the best terroirs of Patrimonio. Today the domain covers 13 hectares. In 2005, with his two sons, he decided to conquer the heights of Carco, a beautiful parcel with perfect exposure to the sun but resting on enormous rocks. Enough to make you throw in the towel at once ! After breaking the rocks to pieces and pulling them out of the ground, the one-hectare parcel is planted with Vermentino and Bianco. Determination is really the words that best describes Antoine Arena and his family. Antoine never gives up the fight when it comes to preserving the terroirs and the life of soils. Ploughing, no treatments, manure-based fertilizers etc… Biodynamic preparations are used on slopes with a gradient of more than 25% where olive trees and Corsican scrub used to grow in the past.

[span size="6"]Antoine was a pioneer for this appellation and also the driving force which triggered something off in the mind of other local winegrowers then encouraged to work towards quality. The wines produced are powerful and yet extremely fluid and- for some of them -diplaying mineral notes and which will benefit from a couple of years’ ageing. The vineyard is split into 3 distinct parcels: Carco planted with Vermentino- 2 hectares- and Nieluccio -1 hectare on hard limestone soils facing east/west with a plantation density of 4000 vines per ha; Grotte di sole is a 3-hectare parcel planted with Vermentino -1 ha- and Nieluccio -2ha- on a clay-limestone mix facing south and 5000 vines per ha. Morta Maio is 1.6 hectare planted with Nieluccio with 5000 vines per ha. And a couple of other parcels planted with Muscat grapes. The two sons will be there to take up the torch: Jean-Baptiste who came back in 2003 after studying law and today in the vineyards and the main driving force in the conversion from organic to biodynamic. As for Antoine-Marie-aged 27- he came back home in 2004 after history studies and is now in charge of winemaking. But Antoine is never far away…
