Angiolino Maule (Biancara domaine) started his career as a pizzaiolo and went on for about 12 years ! It seems he had a good reputation. How does one choose the vine and natural wines ?! It is either in one’s blood or it comes as a call… However, thank to his work and savings, Angiolino bought around 6 hectares (at the end of the eighties) in the Gambellara hills, in the hamlet of Biancara. As an indication it is located between Verona at the ouest and Vicence at the east ! Far north of the italian boot. Soils there are from volcanic origin, full of minerals and fine clay. The main grape variety is the Garganega (superb white wines). Vines are planted around 200 m high on south exposure protected from north winds. Soils have been plowed with no intrants for many years following processes close to biodynamic principles. The search for ecological balance stimulates the plants good health : encouraging self protection naturally. Fruit produces wine with men intervention to help reach balance and maturity.
Angiolino Maule is convinced - as we are - that the grapes quality is the result of the care we take of the vines. That work continues in the winery : vinification, ageing and bottling. Why not carry on following the same principles and put at risk the titanic work done in the vines ? Consequently all steps on to bottling are carried out without additive. The domaine today spreads over 11 hectares. Work is done with the family, his wife Rosamaria and eldest sons Francesco and Alessandro. The old olive trees also need attention as well as apricot, fig and cherry trees for Rosamaria to make stunning jam. Ahhh When Bio is all over… all is good ! Since 2006, Angiolino Maule is the president of the Vinnatur.org society gathering over 170 winegrowers in 9 countries. A beleiver, definitivamente !
