Kohki Iwata is a young japanese arrived in France in 2008. Before that he worked in a natural wine bar in Osaka (Japan) for around 5 years.
When arriving in France he did a few internships with renowned winegrowers such as Olivier Cousin (2 months) or Jean Foillard (6 months) for instance. Then he worked 4 years at Augé wine merchant in Paris starting in 2010. In 2015, he got a job at domaine des Soulié (Saint Chinian). A domaine whose particularity is to have worked according to organic principles since 1960 on a large area : 27 ha. This vineyard is also famous for its constant ecological approach. For this reason, it may boast about being 100% (green) electricity autonomous.
Kohki Iwata settled in the area (at Assignan) with his wife and decided in 2016 to start his own vinification. He bought grapes from the Domaine des Soulié (with AB and Ecocert certification) next door. A japanese company did provide him financing to launch his business. The “SAS Wa Sud” was set up in 2017.
His wines are vinified without input, just pure juice. Production is small (around 5000 bottles) and quality is there indeed. Truly those japanese winegrowers are amazing and go on showing their interest in natural wines of France. To follow.
