Axel Prüfer came from Germany and arrived in Southern France in 1988. After meeting Yan Rohel, Eric Pffeferling and Jean-François Nick- 3 figureheads of the natural wine movement-he naturally threw himself into his new life as a winemaker.2003 was the very first vintage produced by Axel who owns part of this 8.5 hectare domain and rents the rest of it. The name of the cuvées are all evocative if not provocative and so are the wines themselves. It takes a lot of expertise and spirit of innovation to experiment long maceration time for the white wines or to blend the various wines made from different grape varieties he has himself forgotten the name !
In the world of natural wines, Axel Prüfer is an emblematic figure who produces 4 separate flagship cuvées including 100% Carignan-based “Avanti Popolo” coming from 60 year-old vines growing on granite and quartz soil. Or the Carignan, Grenache and old Cinsault-based cuvées “Les Lendemains qui Chantent” made from 25-year-old Grenache planted on granitic hillsides. The last one being his favourite cuvées. Finally the 100% Chardonnay “Peur du Rouge” is lively and experimental.
