Our opinion on this winery

La Porte Saint Jean (Montreuil-Bellay – 15 km south of Saumur) Sylvain Dittière (named Tonton) settled as a winegrower in 2010. He was then 24 and yet had a few years training experience in renowned places such as (Domaine Gauby, Cyril Fahl - Roussillon), Thierry Germain (Saumur and Saumur-Champigny), Château Yvonne (Saumur-Champigny), Marc Tempé (Alsace) and finally the mythic Clos Rougeard. He happens to be the son in law of Françoise and late Charly Foucault since living with Pauline (sister of Antoine Foucault – Domaine du Collier). Well, deep in the heart of Saumurois ! In 2010, Sylvain was a farm tenant (3ha) and bought the grapes. Today the domaine covers 8,5ha with recently bought new plots that will soon produce white a wine cuvée (chenin) and a red one (cabernet franc). Sylvain cautiously cultivates his plots and gives out huge work in the vines. During harvest he is at the end of the line, doing the last sorting out himself. --- The plot of white produces 2 cuvées : Saut-Mignon (Sauvignon) and La Perlée (usually in Saumur but more frequently in Vin de France designation). It is elaborated out of 60 to 90 years old Chenins. A cuvée made for keeping. The same can be said of his red Saumur cuvée, Les Cormiers (60 years old Cabernet Franc, grown on hard limestone and flint soils). Ageing is long, 24 months on average and is done in barrels kept in that amazing cellar. Then comes the fourth cuvée (Porte Saint Jean), a red one with the Saumur Champigny appellation. 100% cabernet franc out of younger vines grown on clay soils. Shorter breeding of around 18 months offering a fresher and more gourmand red wine than the previous one, but fine and elegant as ever. --- Wine ageing is indeed Sylvain’s signature and his chance is to be able to take advantage of a magnificent buried tuffeau stone cellar from the 16th century whose temperature remains constant. There the winery is above and the barrels are below in the underground cellar, so barrel filling is done by gravity. Constant temperature, long ageing, no input. Only a tiny bit at bottling (around 30mg of S02 in Total, hardly any). According to our experienced wine tasters a little (a lot we should say) credit should be given to Clos Rougeard indeniable skill. Charly may rest in peace considering the work carried out by his son Antoine and son in law Sylvain. White and red wines hold freshness, delicacy, soupleness, minerality, elegance, fineness.
