Taken over in 2008, the Domaine of Clos de l’Elu spreads on the equivalent of 25 hectares, divided out all around the village of St Aubin de Luignié in the country of Coteaux du Layon. The 30 vineyard plots are on schist soils facing south around the village. The 8 grapes varieties grown represent the traditional wine panel of the Loire valley: Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Grolleau, Pineau d’Aunis ….. The new thing brought by the two associates, Thomas Carsin and Gregoire du Bouexic, holds in two words: rigour and transparency. Their involvement in the making of clean and juicy wines is recent since their wines were only certified as organic in 2013 - but enthusiasm is there and the methods used reflect their passion: no chemicals in their grass-covered vineyard, light plowing by tractor, in the cellar the work is done by gravity, crushing by feet and a slow pressing. Seeing them working in the cellar gives out an atmosphere of joyful school children. Nevertheless these two were not exactly born yesterday: one of them was an agricultural engineer who travelled to California to learn about American winemaking practices and the other one set up a tasting club. And to crown it all , Thomas’s spouse, Charlotte, is a consultant and is involved in the making of one of the wines.
