A U.F.O in no man’s land ?? And yet… Claude Courtois- so well-known in the small world of organic wines- has been making totally atypical and natural wines his own way, with the utmost care and this has been going on for more than 20 years. Lost in the centre of the Loire region, close to Blois, in a corner of France with no reputation for quality wines -poor soils not quite suitable for any kind of agriculture- he has been able- with what looks like a “tour de force” to turn these plots into a garden where Gamay, Cabernet, Côt, Sauvignon and Pineau give birth to top quality grapes. Their strict philosophy was a determining factor: organic farming, no chemicals in order to bring life into the soil where microbic environment thrives ; parcels of vines surrounded by woods, fields of flowers; grass cover in the rows, hand-picking and very small yields of 20 to 22 hectares. But before all, Claude Courtois is quite a character ! A farmer winemaker surrounded by his animals and always with his dogs.
Fascinating, passionate, cheerful, communicative, respectful of his interlocutor, he drives you in a world made of quality, ideas and righteousness. Just like his wines, marked by tension, minerality or acidity, frankness and complexity. His son Etienne is working at his sides and the other son, Julien, has just taken over one part of the Domaine of Cailloux du Paradis -4 hectares-. He's producing distinguished wines in a younger style bottled with a modern labelling depicting Maori drawings. The new generation is underway and Claude is a pride man who soon will be able to spend most of his time taking care of… his garden, the work of Claude Courtois is to be discovered absolutely. Hats off to you Mr Courtois !
