Our opinion on this winery

The history of the domaine des Bruyères is mixed up with that of the Serret family and later the Reynauds. A history marked by memories of 2 great grand- fathers, one laid the foundations of the domain by planting a vineyard, the other one moved from farm to farm with his wheelie wine press. The next one was the grand-father Georges Reynaud who was a pioneer in the field of kiwi plantations in the Rhone valley. In other respects he considerably expanded the vineyard up to 7 hectares, delivering his harvest to the cooperative winery of Tain l'Hermitage. He also went to great lengths to improve the image of Crozes Hermitage appellation. In 1998, in order to perpetuate the tool, the domaine was taken over by daughter- in-law, Marceline Reynaud .With her, the rows of vines are restructured and trellised in order to mechanize the vineyard. She also extended the vineyard up to 12 hectares and also planted apricot trees. In 2000, her son David, joined her on the team. With a degree in oenology, he decided to write a new page of the history of the domaine by opting for biologic culture. He purchased some vineyard plots, replanted them and step by step converted the exploitation to biodynamic culture. David Reynaud achieved his big project in 2003: the winemaking and the commercialization of his own harvest, in a brand new complex which uses gravity, respecting demanding work. That was the birth of domaine les Bruyères.--- Today the vineyard is 17 hectares mainly in the AOC "Crozes Hermitage", the yields are low around 35 hl/ha, on limestone-clay terraces with well-draining soils made of detrital pebbles. Certified by "ecocert", the culture is done by hand including de-budding, tying up, green harvest and the elimination of laterals. It’s just the same for the harvest in autumn when the grapes are sorted out both when cut but also on a sorting table.--- David Reynaud and his mother have many versions of their Crozes Hermitage, red and white but also some Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodanniennes in white Viognier, rosés, red Syrah and Merlot. Convinced by the quality of their work, and having the same philosophy, Maryline Mathais, friends and neighbours have brought their organically-grown grapes to be vinified here since 2009. These grapes come from the Mathais’ 8 –hectare Crozes-Hermitage vineyard.
