Settled in Calce since 2014, Raphaël Baissas de Chastenet likes opposing his work methods and graff artistic practice. It could be like suspended time that would come and go. To make wine implies putting together all the ingredients and adapt to the situation. It is the result of a sensitivity towards the vine, like the artist with his brushes and emotion in front of a blank canvas. That interest for vine and wine has always been there for Raphaël. As a child he used to help his maternal grandfather in the wine cellar and pruning the vine on their land of the Dona mountain pass where he lives now. Moments that gave him the taste for agricultural labour. Always bearing in mind his final project to produce his own wine, he went looking for new professional experiments, cultivating his need of freedom and developing his love of art.
Then his grandfather gave him the opportunity to take over some vines planted 30 years before. He resigned from his job which did not suit him anymore and settled down at Calce, on his home land perched at 200 meter high in Roussillon, under Jean-Philippe Padié ’s guidance. Raphaël had difficulties reviving that abrupt, wild, uncultivated land, but through hard work, he gave birth to his first vintage in 2014. The grape is hand picked and elaborated with no chemical input, it is selected in order to get the best out of it. Aging is done in vat, no blending, no filtration, indigenous yeast. Vandal-Wine / Nada today has grown; new vintages and 7 hectares to lead so to meet his inspiration. His aim is to share a true attitude of life: carpe diem. Raphaël, we are behind you !
