Our opinion on this winery

Domaine Raphaël Bartucci Raphaël Bartucci is a man in a million and also a self-taught winegrower. His parents fled Calabria in the late 1950’s to settle in Moselle. During the summer holiday Raphaël would often spend some time in the Bugey. A few years later, in 1981, after a degree in electo mechanical engineering and a strong desire to become a farmer, he purchased a ruin in Mérignat. Today he lives in this house, in this village. He made up his mind to plant a few vines for his own consumption. In his eyes wine was a noble product, a natural one not industrial. He didn’t like it when some people frowned upon his way of making wines. He looked for some advice and-through some friends-met Pierre Overnoy then Marcel Lapierre who told him that indeed there was another way wine could be made. 1983 was his first vintage and since then he has regularly planted a few acres now totalling 2.1 hectares scattered over 10 plots !

Having another job he worked all day and it is only on weekends and late into the night on week days that he had time to work in the vineyard. He soon made a name for himself in France but also abroad as far as Japan thanks to his dtermination and the authenticity of his wines. It is in 1992 that he devoted 100% of his time producing Cerdon wines and became a full-time winegrower. His wines were certified as organic by independent body Ecocert. He spends lots of time ploughing and thinning out the leaves. Yields are restricted to 60 hl per ha in the best years and expanding the size of the vineyard is no priority. Today this 2.1-hectare vineyard is enough to make happy. He also employs someone 6 months a year and a team of 20 pickers for a week.
