Getting information on this domain is quite a challenge! Catherine and Jean-Mary are not exactly what you would call a talkative couple. So before giving you the kind of details that can be found everywhere, here is a brief overview of the appellation zone. Côtes de Duras is an old but little-known appellation dating back to 1937. And yet it can boast top quality terroirs. It is located south-east of Bergerac , covers almost 2,000 hectares of vineyards and in this area farmers far outnumber winegrowers. Catherine and Jean-Mary Le Bihan challenged themselves to purchase parcels or small wineries here and there. Today their vineyard covers over 20 hectares. Right from the start in 2000 they opted for the most natural methods with top quality grapes being the cornerstone to the production of great wines. Their second top priority was to bring out the soils’minerality and complexity.
To achieve their goal they reduced yields dramatically from 50 hl per ha down to an average of 25 hl per hectare. And for them the identity of the soil takes precedence over the varietal. Great attention is paid to detail both in the vineyard and the winery where Jean-Mary lets nature take its own course with as little intervention as possible. A few years back we had a crush on this estate but it’s not until 2015 that everything became obvious to us: we must work together ! In only a few years, Domaine Mouthes le Bihan made a name for themselves and became the figurehead of a too long forgotten appellation. Congratulations to you both for your confidence and your superb wines ! [http://www.mouthes-le-bihan.com]
