Marcel Lapierre was the undisputed -and known as such-French master of sulphur-free vinification in the Beaujolais region. After his death in 2010, his son Matthieu took over this outstanding estate. As a great intellectual, artist and pedagogue, Marcel Lapierre discovered Jules Chauvet’s teachings in 1981. Chauvet was a researcher and the father of natural wines. At that time Marcel- who was the 3rd generation of winegrowers-decided to turn towards more gentle and less interventionist methods. Since then the domain’s philosophy has always been the same: even more natural wines through biodynamic principles. Regarding vine-growing the Lapierres often resort to ploughing to keep the soils alive and they use only organic treatments. The hand-picked grapes are severely sorted out and cooled if needs be.
Whole bunches with no imputs are vinified right from the fermentation stage -which lasts at least 9 months- to the maturing in barrels or big tuns, some being 13 years of age. Finally the wine comes in 3 styles for the Morgon: a sulphur-free unfiltered cuvee, another one with minimal doses of just enough sulphur to stabilize the wine and a last one filtered and sulphur-potected. But the 16-hectare Domaine Lapierre also offers-including two Côte de Py Morgon-other cuvees such as ‘the Gaulois’ Vin de France or exceptionally the one to be laid down called “Cuvée Marcel Lapierre”.
